Suddenly: Double Exposures and Unexpected Encounters Tina Howe

About the show

About the Artist

“With a scalpel in one hand and a banana peel in the other, Howe cuts to the heart of our deepest fears.”
— Judith Barlow, author of Howe in an Hour

Tina Howe, a playwright known for her heightened sensibility and visually evocative worlds, is the winner of the Obie Award, New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award, American Academy of Arts and Letters Award in Literature, PEN / Laura Pels Master American Dramatist Award, and Lilly Award for Lifetime Achievement. She received a Tony Award nomination for her play Coastal Disturbances and was twice a Pulitzer Prize finalist, for her plays Painting Churches and Pride’s Crossing.

As a child, she was often surrounded by art as she grew up three blocks from the Metropolitan Museum and on rainy days, her artist mother would encourage her and her brother to “go play” at the museum. She has frequently written about art in plays including Painting Churches, Rembrandt’s Gift, Chasing Manet, and Museum — a play that has been performed in art galleries around the country as well as in theatres.

With the photographer Tina Barney, Ms. Howe co-created the book Swimming for the Library Fellows of the Whitney Museum of American Art. That book was hung page by page in Janet Borden’s gallery and now resides in the Metropolitan Museum’s collection, among others.

Her watercolors and pen and ink drawings have been exhibited and sold in Chatham, NY.

This is her debut photography exhibit.
